Received MOAA’s national FIVE STAR AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
This prestigious award was given in recognition of the Mount Vernon Chapter’s superior accomplishments during past year. This was the 13th year in a row that the Chapter has received this prestigious designation.
Chapter Scholarship Program
Organized a scholarship awards program in conjunction with local high schools. Solicited funds and provided scholarship grants to selected JROTC seniors. Currently conducting a priority drive to increase funding for these awards.
Expanded our membership program and incentives to encourage current Active Duty, Guard and Reserve officers to become members. Increased our transition and employment assistance to attract new retirees through coordination with MOAA’s national Officer Placement Service. Of the last year, the Chapter’s military membership has increased. AND the first year is free.
Continued efforts to provide financial support for the Fort Belvoir "Hearts Apart" program for family members of deployed forces. Additionally, contributions were made to the Fort Belvoir Fisher House during the Holiday Season.
Supported community patriotic and veterans’ functions including Presidential Veteran’s Day ceremonies at Arlington Cemetery, the Wreaths Across America Program at Alexandria National Cemetery and the Honor Flight welcoming event for WWII veterans at Reagan National Airport. Presented JROTC MOAA awards/medals at 10 area high schools.
Conducted Personal Affairs presentation at a monthly dinner meeting that provided information of military benefits, legal matters, insurance, healthcare and other information. Maintained an informational handbook to assist members emergency planning.
Published ten issues of our award winning newsletter “The Despatch” which provides timely information on Chapter activities. Maintained a Chapter website www.mvmoaa.com and continue to expand its capabilities. Earned MOAA Communications Award for Website and Newsletter.
Supported MOAA legislative efforts at the national level by informing membership, participating in MOAA direct communication program with congressional members, and coordination of Virginia Council of Chapters Congressional luncheon. Participated in MOAA’s Virginia Council of Chapters meetings and “Storming of the Hill” with the Virginia General Assembly.
Sponsored monthly dinner meetings at the Fort Belvoir Officers Open Mess and The Fairfax Retirement Community. Coordinated a festive and well-attended Christmas Party. Hosted a wide range of interesting speakers, including a State Legislator, dramatic history interpreter, an author of military action novels, MOAA officials, ROTC Professor of Military Science, and a local historian.
